1885 Engraving – Print Professionally Hand-Colored, Matted, and Framed ON THE ICEBy Artist Bror Thure de Hulstrup Original Double-Page Feature From Harper’s Weekly Jan. 30, 1886 Edition Artwork approx. 19″ x 14″Framed Size approx. 26″ x 21.5″ [ FEATURES & DETAILS… ] This is the original 2-page spread from the Jan. 30, 1886 edition of Harper’s Weekly; it is not a reprint. The moveable type can still be seen faintly showing through from the opposite side of the paper.It is artist-signed (not by hand, but as part of the engraving) “Thulstrup 85” and also “H. Goetze Co.” At the bottom is the Harper’s Weekly caption: “ON THE ICE. – Drawn by T. de Thulstrup.” As shown in the final photo, it was originally a monochrome (black & white) print. Someone removed it from the magazine and had it very professionally and beautifully hand-colored. This is not a “home paint-box” job.Then it was professionally matted and framed circa 1950s, and has not been removed from the frame since then. It is in a Mid-century wooden frame with typical black lacquer and goldtone accents. The original backing paper is still in place, as are the original eye screws and cable. As you see, it once had the framer’s label near the bottom-center of the backing paper, but the label has gone missing.To be clear: This is not an original strike of the artist’s 1885 engraving. It is an original 1886 double-page print of that engraving, which appeared in Harper’s Weekly. About the Artist (from Online Sources):Thule de Thulstrup Born “Bror Thule Thulstrup”: 1848 – Stockholm, Sweden / Died: 1930 – New York City Known for: Historical military scene magazine and newspaper illustration Name variants: Bror De Thulstrup, Thure (Bror) De Thulstrup, Thure Thulstrup Thure de Thulstrup was a Swedish-born illustrator who, after emigrating to America, became one of the leading illustrators here, with contributions to numerous magazines, including three decades of work for Harper’s Weekly. [ CONDITION… ] – Honest antique/vintage condition, with the colors still nice and bright – No signs of dampstain or other neglect, but there is plenty of age foxing on both the mat and the print. Please look carefully at the photos. It would look a bit nicer if at least the mat were removed and replaced. – The frame has some dings (as pictured) from age and storage. The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don’t we all!?)
