VINTAGE MECHANICAL GAMBLING LITTLE MONTE CARLO WATCH STYLE ROULETTE DEVICE VINTAGE MECHANICAL GAMBLING LITTLE MONTE CARLO WATCH STYLE ROULETTE DEVICE VINTAGE MECHANICAL GAMBLING LITTLE MONTE CARLO WATCH STYLE ROULETTE DEVICE This is a pocket watch size gambling device that appears to be a standard size pocket watch with a dial but with a single hand, a stem, and a watch chain top ring. These devices are made with different faces for different gambling games. However, all are designed as a pocket gambling piece for a Sporting Gent or Lady to offer a spontaneous game of chance to his / her companion(s) anytime, anywhere, such as at a gambling hall, barroom, saloon or tavern, casino, leisure, or sporting event, perhaps for a drink or round of drinks. The dial face appears to be a typical watch face, but upon close inspection is a clear coating over a printed background. The domed watch crown is plastic that has normal surface scratches from pocket wear. The dial has the desirous outside segmented border resembling a roulette wheel with 36 segments: 35 numbered segments with one 0 segment at the top and alternating red and black colors in the inside circular simulated roulette wheel. The dial is marked LITTLE MONTE CARLO and REGISTERED (see note* below) to suggest a casino style game. These devices vary slightly in features, and most have a very simple in design and application, i.e., you wind the stem, and the single hand rotates and will stop on its own, with revolution speed and the number of full dial spins depending on how many times you wind the stem. The hand begins to turn as soon as the stem is wound, and usually a couple of turns will make the hand rotate a couple of times. The more you wind the stem, the faster it rotates and the longer the time until the hand comes to rest for the results. The stem can be wound (2 – 3 is fine); anymore and you could possibly overwind the spring. Some of these pieces have slightly different mechanisms affected by the stem. This piece has a stem that when pushed will stop the moving hand; when released, the hand resumes rotating. With multiple players, each one would get to spin the hand and the highest number wins, with a tie requiring a runoff. With two players, the better could also declare either black or red color as the winning color or as an additional bet. This could also be used with a portable felt roulette layout for multiple bettors. Many of these devices have their own idiosyncrasies, and this piece has a different clockwork mechanism (see* below) that is smaller and thinner than others, and thus, makes a whirling sound. Most of these devices were made in Germany, and I believe date to around the 1950’s – 60’s. In overall excellent condition. The base metal is usually plain and nickel-plated brass or steel. This piece appears to be steel with the back having a different Art Deco embossed pattern showing light surface scratches and a few tiny spots of natural aging. The top rotating attachment ring is designed to attach to a watch chain. Note* that is particular Pocket watch is slightly smaller, thinner. and more lightweight and appears to be a different Maker than all other Monte Carlo watches I have seen, weighing 1.6 ounces or 46 grams, 1 3/4” in diameter x 3/16” thick.
