Adorned with meticulously hand-painted enameled flowers, the base bears the mark “Emaux De Longwy Decore A La Main France,” along with identifying numbers and letters. Measuring approximately 7 x 4 x 2 inches, this piece boasts vibrant and striking colors. Some crazing, commonly found in this type of glaze, is visible, along with a minor chip on the base that does not detract from the overall beauty of the item. In the late 1700s, the rise in popularity and commercial success of Asian ceramics served as an inspiration for ceramicists in Longwy to achieve remarkable technical advancements. In 1798, Charles Régnier established a workshop dedicated to producing faience ceramics—in Longwy-Bas, the lower district of the town. By the 1820s, skilled artisans were producing exquisite, richly colored enamels, including a diverse spectrum of blues ranging from royal to turquoise, culminating in the distinctive “bleu de Longwy.” It is this unique hue—a blend not quite reaching turquoise—and the finely crackled enamel finish that set apart Longwy enamels, known as émaux de Longwy. The crafting process involved multiple firings in the kiln, alongside meticulous attention to detail during the extensive finishing stages. Today, only a select few ceramicists continue the legacy of Longwy enamels. The significant labor invested in producing these exquisite pieces is reflected in their premium prices—often amounting to several hundred dollars for a single plate or vase.
